Every horse, regardless to the level of training advancement and "dollars worth", needs a space to exercise steps outside of his box. For horses going into the field is like a visit in the best five stars wellness SPA resort (stars are awarded here depending on quality of grass and space).
Because horse is a steppe animal, he is constructed in such a way that it needs bigger space to move than outdoor arena, indoor arena, it's box or stable's corridor. Moreover, please let's imagine your life deprived of all outside activities. I belive that for every healthy person especially citizen post-pandemic world it would be a nightmare. Please believe me when I say that for every horse that kind of life is equal to death for life.
Horses who are sad, anxiety, apathetic, malicious, depressive, refusing to cooperate, unfortunately, these are exactly the ones who live the life of a "stable prisoner"
During my whole equestrian life most injuries that required long-term treatment occurred during training or were the result of improper training. Even the horse worth the most money in the world, a star of all competitions awarded with countless medals, should be turning out. Please imagine for example, Iga Świątek and what her physical and mental health would be like if her life activity was limited only to the four walls of her home and court.
However, it is worth asking ourselves whether our horse needs more a paddock or maybe a pasture, and if so, which paddock, how big or what kind of pasture in what company. You can always use the lifeline and ask people for their opinion who:
a) have big equestrian experience and love horses
b) are good coaches/instructors
c) are veterinary doctors who cooperate with equestrians
d) are empathetic and responsible stable owners
The greatest challange in pasture/paddock's life are undoubtedly stallions, but there are stables which are organized/secured outside space so keeping them is no such a big deal. However most of stallions can only dream about pasture and company, because the fight for dominance is not even an injury causing factor, but a deadly one.
To sum up, everything is for horses and their humans, but in this case, it is up to us how good conditions we will provide to our unicorns.
Please stay tuned with my blog, so you will be able to find out more about turning out horses very soon.
